Amycus Carrow background

Amycus was born before 1981 into the Carrow Family.

1 of the last truly pureblood ancestries in the wizarding world.

As a result, Amycus’s parents knew how to use magic too.

But did the young wizard grow up alone?

No, he had his sister Alecto Carrow. An evil witch that became a Death Eater like Amycus.

And both of them followed the Dark Lord Voldemort.

In fact, they were his loyal servants in all wizarding wars. Dangerous events that shook the magic world to its core.

Sadly, we don’t know much about his past.

But like most young wizards and witches that lived in Britain…

Amycus Carrow also went to Hogwarts. The premier magical school for witchcraft and wizardry.

He was sorted into the Slytherin House. A name that’s infamous for stuck-up and not-so-friendly students.

Amycus grew up to mirror all of those evil traits. So much so that he even enjoyed torture.

And between you and me…

I wouldn’t mess with a dark wizard like Amycus Carrow.

Amycus Carrow occupation

Amycus never held a proper job.

What’s worse, he was known for serving Voldemort.

And I don’t think anyone would hire him knowing that.

But everything changed when Severus Snape killed Dumbledore. It sent the wizarding world into a panic.

Nobody expected a professor to betray the most powerful wizard of all time.

As a result, the plan to take over Hogwarts was a complete success.

And Voldemort’s forces now oversaw the entire magical school.

“What does this all have to do with Amycus Carrow’s job?”

Well, now that the villains are in control…

Can you guess who got the position of Deputy Headmaster?

That’s right, it’s none other than Amycus himself.

He was made 2nd-in-command at Hogwarts.

Not to mention, his sister Alecto got the role too.

What’s more, the evil duo was in charge of student discipline.

And can you guess what horrible things they did?

They’d go as far as torturing the students. In fact, they even beat them up when they wouldn’t listen to them.

On top of that, Amycus switched up the lessons.

He didn’t teach students how to protect themselves from the Dark Arts.

Amycus taught them how to use it.

So under his instruction, everyone learned how to hurt others. Using some of the most dangerous curses and spells in the wizarding world.

A short-lived time at the wizarding school

A Short-lived Time At The Wizarding School

On the bright side, Amycus didn’t work in Hogwarts for too long.

And considering that a study shows the dangerous impact of torture. Like life-long trauma and depression…

It’s in the best interest that Amycus stay out of teaching jobs for good.

But how’d things end up this way, you ask?

Well, Dumbledore’s Army staged a counterattack.

A swift plan to retake control of Hogwarts.

And with Harry and his secret organization of skilled wizards and witches…

Snape and the Carrows didn’t stand a chance.

In fact, the professors immediately stood beside Harry Potter. Even Amycus Carrow and his sister couldn’t escape their attacks.

And I strongly recommend rewatching that thrilling movie clip:

More facts about Amycus Carrow

#1: Disappeared after the 1st Wizarding War

Amycus Carrow was a Death Eater in the 1st Wizarding War.

A time when the Dark Lord originally rose to power.

However, it wouldn’t be long until the Dark forces were defeated.

Especially when Voldemort suddenly disappeared.

But did the Death Eaters give up?

No, they kept fighting.

In fact, most of them searched everywhere for their Dark master.

And when everything seemed bleak…

The most loyal servants of Voldemort didn’t even flinch at the idea of going to Azkaban. A maximum-security prison for magical criminals.

But what about Amycus Carrow?

Well, it turned out he was less loyal than everybody else.

He didn’t bother looking for Voldemort.

Amycus just thought he died or lost.

“But did he at least face Azkaban like the others?”

No, he didn’t. Both Carrows avoided any prison time.

#2: Forgiven by the Dark Lord

You’d expect Voldemort to get mad at the Carrows, right?

I mean, they weren’t as loyal as the Death Eaters that went to prison. So there must be some kind of punishment?

Surprisingly, nothing bad happened.

In fact, Amycus and Alecto were welcomed when Voldemort came back.

And even if we don’t see them in the movies…

There’s a good chance they were at Little Hangleton on June 24, 1995. A small village in England where Voldemort was reborn.

#3: Used students as spell practice

If you thought torture was bad enough.

Amycus Carrow also used students as target practice.

So what happened to students with detention?

Well, they didn’t spend any time out of class.

Their classmates would practice casting dangerous spells on them instead.

Sure, it might not seem like the worst thing a Death Eater could do…

Especially when you consider all the murders they’ve done.

But that doesn’t make it any better.

In fact, Neville Longbottom ended up with a lot of scars. He was a courageous wizard that didn’t agree with Amycus Carrow or his sister Alecto.

He even said:

“Amycus, the bloke, he teaches what used to be Defence Against the Dark Arts, except now it’s just the Dark Arts. We’re supposed to practice the Cruciatus Curse on people who’ve earned detentions —”

And if you don’t know how dangerous that spell can be…

It’s 1 of the 3 unforgivable curses. And it can make the victim go insane.

#4: A pretty decent magical professor

Sure, Amycus wasn’t kind.

And he didn’t teach the students what they needed.

But as far as the Dark Arts went…

Amycus really did know his stuff.

In fact, he transformed Crabbe and Goyle into top-performing wizards.

“Wait, what makes those 2 wizards so special anyway?”

Well, they’re not the brightest students.

What’s worse, these 2 Slytherins were at the bottom ranks of their class.

But, even Crabbe learned to cast Fiendfyre with Amycus’s help. A dangerous curse that summoned fire monsters.

Plus, it can destroy nearly everything in its path.

In fact, it’s also 1 of the few spells that can destroy Horcruxes. A magical tool that can make a witch or wizard immortal.

Plus, research shows that teaching quality’s important. Especially when improving student achievement.

As a result, It would’ve taken a lot of work to teach Crabbe and Goyle.

So Amycus’s good for 1 thing at the very least.

#5: Mocked Dumbledore moments before his death

Although we don’t know what kind of history Amycus had with Dumbledore…

He sure did take his chance to mock the wizard before his death.

Amycus said:

“He’s not long for this world anyway, if you ask me! Look at him — what’s happened to you, then, Dumby?”

But of course, Dumbledore wisely replied with:

“Oh, weaker resistance, slower reflexes, Amycus. Old age, in short… one day, perhaps, it will happen to you… if you are lucky…”
