Cedric Diggory background

Cedric’s born sometime between September 1 and October 30, 1997.

He was the only son of Amos Diggory and his wife.

And Cedric lived a quiet life in a small town nearby Devon, England.

But was he some ordinary wizard?

No, Cedric was destined for greatness. And his talents in magic took to far places.

In fact, his father loved bragging about him to family and friends.

And his many adventures began in 1989…

The very year he attended the wizarding school of Hogwarts.

Here, Cedric Diggory was sorted into the Hufflepuffs. A house that’s famous for loyal, kind, and hard-working students.

And would Cedric reflect these traits too?

Well, let’s just say he knocked them out of the park.

So much so that many fans consider him to be the shining example of a true Hufflepuff.

For instance, whenever everybody wore the ‘Potter Stinks’ badge.

He went out of his way to tell his friends and anyone who’d listen to take them off.

Cedric hated the idea of bullying. And it’s 1 of the shining moments that showed off his kindness and strong sense of justice.

Plus, a study shows being thoughtful and showing sympathy to others can have a lot of benefits.

And that you’d be a lot happier and enjoy life even more.

So it’s pretty safe to say that Cedric Diggory was on the right track to be an upstanding wizard.

Cedric Diggory occupation

Cedric’s still pretty young when we first see him in films or books.

As a result, you can’t expect the busy wizard to hold down a proper job just yet.

He’s still got exams and studies to worry about first!

But Cedric’s no stranger to big responsibilities.

In fact, he’s actually very active outside of academic stuff.

For example, he’s the captain of the Hufflepuff Quidditch team.

The most famous flying sport in the wizarding world.

And the best part?

Well, Cedric played as the Seeker. 1 of the hardest roles in a Quidditch game.

In fact, any good Seeker can turn the game in their favor by scoring 150 points.

For example, he actually went toe to toe with Harry Potter.

And both young wizards were chasing after that 1 winning goal to change the game.

But did Harry manage to get it first?

No, it’s actually Cedric Diggory.

Which goes to show how good a flyer he can be.

Not to mention, such a great leader for his Hufflepuffs too.

Triwizard Tournament

On top of being a Quidditch team captain.

Cedric Diggory’s also the Triwizard champion for Hogwarts.

And if Barty Crouch Jr didn’t mess with the candidates.

Cedric would’ve been the only 1 representing the school in the international contest.

What’s more, everybody cheered for him. Even the Slytherins supported him.

In fact, it’s 1 of the cherished moments when all of Hogwarts came together.

But would Cedric crumble from all the pressure?

No, he’d perform amazingly well throughout the tournament.

For instance, he carefully evaded a dragon by keeping it distracted.

And what did he do, you ask?

He transformed a rock into a dog to keep the beast company.

What’s more, he also saved Cho Chang from the bottom of Hogwarts Lake.

And he swam out of the water at record pace…

Beating everyone’s time as well.

“Wow, so how’d Cedric Diggory end up winning? Did everyone celebrate right after?”

Sadly, things took a turn for the worst.

When Cedric and Harry reached the trophy.

Both of them held it at the same time and were transported to a graveyard.

Cedric didn’t understand what was happening at the time…

But Harry was already telling him to run away and get back to Hogwarts.

And yet, before the young Hufflepuff had a chance to react.

Voldemort ordered Peter Pettigrew to:

“…kill the spare.”

As a result, Cedric’s body fell to the ground, lifeless.

And even if the 2 managed to escape the Dark Lord’s grasp…

There was no chance of bringing Cedric back from the dead.

In fact, it’s 1 of the most heartbreaking scenes in the film. And I strongly recommend watching it again:

Cedric Diggory character

Cedric wasn’t just kind.

He’s also pretty gifted in the looks department.

The young Hufflepuff was tall, handsome, well-built, and had grey eyes.

In fact, even Katie Bell described him as:

“Strong and silent.”

And on top of his flying skills…

He’s no slouch when it comes to magic too.

For example, he could use Stupefy on an Acromantula.

And he managed to stun the giant spider and even defeat it with Harry’s help.

Sadly, he met a tragic death because of Voldemort.

So we never got to see him all grown up and fighting alongside the good guys.

But Cedric Diggory was remembered as a hero.

And this was what Albus Dumbledore shared in his eulogy:

“Remember Cedric. Remember, if the time should come, when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory.”

3 most famous Cedric Diggory quotes

#1: “Harry fell off his broom, Dad. I told you… it was an accident….”

When Harry and Cedric went against each other in a Quidditch match.

The young Potter fell off his broom because he was spooked by Dementors. Dark and tall creatures known to be the scariest in the wizarding world.

However, Cedric’s dad, Amos, couldn’t help but brag about his son’s win over Harry.

But did Cedric just let it slide?

No, he spoke up.

And he made sure his father knew what had happened that day.

In fact, the young Diggory even offered Harry a rematch.

But the rest of the Gryffindors considered it a fair win.

#2: “Take a bath, and — er — take the egg with you, and — er — just mull things over in the hot water. It’ll help you think…. Trust me. Tell you what, use the prefects’ bathroom. Fourth door to the left of that statue of Boris the Bewildered on the fifth floor. Password’s ‘pine fresh’. Gotta go… want to say good night —”

Cedric Helped Harry Out

Although the Triwizard Tournament was a competition…

Harry actually helped Cedric out by telling him about the dragons.

So how’d the Hufflepuff pay Harry back?

Well, Cedric actually gave the young Potter a clue about the golden egg.

You see, this was no ordinary magical item.

In order to crack the code, you had to submerge it in hot water.

But did Harry Potter know about these things?

Sadly, he was stuck trying to figure stuff out.

So Cedric gave Harry a nudge to bring the egg with him to the bath.

In fact, the young Diggory went so far as to give him a quiet bathroom to use as well.

#3: “You take it. You should win. That’s twice you’ve saved my neck in here.”

Cedric’s a fair and honest wizard.

And throughout the final maze of the Triwizard tournament…

Harry Potter actually saved him twice.

The 1st was when Viktor Krum attacked Cedric while under mind control.

And the 2nd was when an Acromantula jumped out of nowhere.

So when Cedric Diggory saw the trophy…

He stopped himself from taking all the glory.

He said that Harry Potter deserved to be the winner…

After everything Harry’s done to help Cedric along the way.

More facts about Cedric Diggory

#1: Madly in love with Cho Chang

Cedric’s no stranger to romance.

And during the Goblet of Fire book…

He actually fell madly in love with Cho Chang.

“Wait, didn’t Cho have a huge crush on Harry Potter?”

Well, that’s what it was supposed to be…

But Cedric had asked her to the dance before Harry could muster up the courage.

And after that, the rest’s history.

Cedric Diggory and Cho Chang fell head over heels for each other.

As a result, you’d always see them in films together.

Not to mention their cute and iconic dance during the Yule Ball. A formal Christmas event celebrated in wizarding schools.

What’s more, Fleur Delacour actually tried to win Cedric Diggory over.

But did her natural charm and attractiveness work?

No, the Hufflepuff resisted her powers.

Which goes to show both how strong Cedric can be…

And just how much he loved Cho Chang too.

However, it also makes Cedric’s death scene feel worse.

Because Cho and Cedric never got the chance to have a future together.

#2: The kindest wizard you’ll ever meet

Cedric Diggory’s kindness was unlike any other.

He always helped Harry Potter whenever he could.

And he also stood for what was right when given a chance.

In fact, he was willing to give up the Triwizard Tournament. Something he worked so hard to reach.

Cedric wanted to give Harry Potter the spotlight.

And I don’t know any other wizard that would’ve sacrificed such a chance at his age.

Plus, if only Harry and Cedric would’ve met sooner…

Who knows what kind of adventure the 2 of them could’ve gone on together?

#3: He’s got a very proud and loving father

Even though Amos Diggory comes off as a bit annoying…

Especially for bragging every second about his son, Cedric.

He’s really just that proud of a father.

And he doesn’t have any other way of expressing his devotion.

Besides, we already have disappointing parents in the Harry Potter universe.

Like Barty Crouch Sr, who never batted an eye at his son at all.

Plus, Amos’ boastfulness can have some good sides too.

For example, Amos actually got mad when the papers overlooked Cedric Diggory.

Cedric’s father even pointed out that Harry did nothing to correct the news outlets too.

However, it made Cedric’s tragic passing all the more painful.

You see, when Harry Potter brought back Cedric’s body to Hogwarts.

Everyone assumed both of them had just won together.

And the loudest screams of joy came from Cedric’s father, Amos.

But when the harsh reality dawned on everyone…

Amos ran toward his son’s dead body and cried:

“… THAT’S MY SON… THAT’S MY BOY…”

It was clear that grief overtook Cedric’s father.

And according to research, the loss of a loved one can have dangerous effects.

What’s worse, only very few recover from the emotional and mental trauma.

#4: A true friend even in death

Although Cedric had already passed.

He actually remained a true friend even in death.

You see, Harry Potter had to duel with Voldemort to escape.

And he would’ve actually lost his life at that very moment.

“I don’t understand. How’d Harry Potter manage to get away?”

Well, when their wands clashed…

Souls began to emerge from their epic battle.

And can you guess who gave Harry a chance to run?

Apart from Harry’s parents, Cedric Diggory also showed up.

As a result, Cedric charged Voldemort to give Harry Potter enough time to escape.

So even in death, he remained a true friend.

Another testament to what a great wizard we lost that night.

#5: He could’ve become a Death Eater

I know it sounds impossible.

It’s the kind and honest Cedric we’re talking about here.

How could he possibly turn to the dark side, right?

Well, in 2020, we found out Amos was still grieving over Cedric’s death.

As a result, Amos begged Harry Potter to go back in time and save his son, Cedric Diggory.

But did Harry Potter agree?

No, he said it was far too dangerous to tamper with time.

However, Albus Potter, son of Harry Potter, secretly agreed to the dangerous task.

And alongside his friend Scorpius Malfoy, the 2 went back in time to save Cedric Diggory.

But did everything go as planned?

Apparently, the only way to save Cedric required humiliation.

And yet, something dark would change inside of him.

Cedric Diggory became bitter and joined the Death Eaters.

Plus, as a loyal follower of the Dark Lord, he’d end up murdering Neville Longbottom too.

But the worst part?

In this timeline, Harry Potter actually lost to Voldemort.

Which goes to show how important of a sacrifice Cedric Diggory made when he died at the hands of the Dark Lord.
