Mafalda Hopkirk background
Unfortunately, we don’t know much about Mafalda Hopkirk’s life.
The books never really explored her character.
And the films only showed very few scenes with Ms. Hopkirk too.
So a lot of her life remains a mystery to fans.
On the bright side, we know Mafalda was born between February 19 to March 20.
And it was either in or before 1973.
On top of that, Mafalda was either a Pure-blood or Half-blood…
Meaning either both or only 1 of her parents was a full wizard.
But a lot more fans believe Ms. Hopkirk was a Half-blood.
Because she wasn’t a big supporter of Voldemort’s cause…
Which was getting rid of everyone who couldn’t use magic.
And she’s not wrong for it too…
Since research shows that discrimination can even have negative effects on mental health.
Like depression and anxiety.
Mafalda Hopkirk occupation
Mafalda worked as an assistant in the Improper Use of Magic Office.
It’s the branch in charge of dealing with the illegal use of spells…
Be it by Hogwarts students or adult wizards.
“Did she arrest people for misusing magic, then?”
Sadly, she didn’t work on the field.
Mafalda did her job from the safety of her desk.
But with the help of magic…
She could send a warning letter anywhere in a few minutes.
So Ms. Hopkirk could still do her job quite well.
Mafalda Hopkirk character
Mafalda Hopkirk was a bit on the short side.
And, in the movies, she was around 163 cm (5ft 4in.) in height.
Ms. Hopkirk also wore glasses.
On top of that, she had grey flyaway hair that made her look like a hard-working employee.
But, in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Mafalda had brown hair instead:
As for her personality, Mafalda Hopkirk was a kind witch.
More facts about Mafalda Hopkirk
#1: Sent Harry Potter a Warning
Harry Potter had a bad habit of getting into trouble.
But what does that have to do with Mafalda, you ask?
Well, she actually sent him a warning.
You see, the wizarding world might be full of magic.
But it’s also got some rules you still need to follow.
For example, underage magic’s a no-go.
Because young wizards and witches still have a lot to learn…
And the risk of something bad happening is way too high.
Unfortunately, Dobby the house-elf used a hover charm.
Worse, it was right in front of Muggles too.
And you’re also not allowed to use spells around non-magical people.
But who got the blame for it?
Well, it’s none other than Harry Potter.
In fact, Mafalda Hopkrik even said that Harry could get expelled too:
“Dear Mr Potter, We have received intelligence that a Hover Charm was used at your place of residence this evening at twelve minutes past nine. As you know, underage wizards are not permitted to perform spells outside school, and further spell work on your part may lead to expulsion from said school…”
#2: Forced to work for Death Eaters
At the height of the wizarding war…
The evil Lord Voldemort took control of the Ministry.
And with the government in his pocket.
It was safe to say that the Dark Lord nearly had control over everything.
Unfortunately for Mafalda…
That meant she had to work for Death Eaters.
Because going against Voldemort’s dark wizards would mean death.
In fact, there’s a good chance she got demoted too…
Since Ms. Hopkirk had to work under Travers.
A British dark wizard with a long history of serving the Dark Lord.
Plus, even research says Mafalda’s in a tough spot…
Because fear can cause a lot of stress and anxiety.
And working around Death Eaters doesn’t exactly make anybody feel safe.
#3: Ambushed by Hermione Granger
I know it sounds crazy…
But Hermione Granger did ambush Mafalda Hopkirk.
In fact, the young witch even locked her away too.
Yet why would she do any of that, you ask?
Well, Harry and his friends needed to get inside the Ministry.
But with Death Eaters everywhere…
Waltzing into the place would be a death wish.
As a result, they needed disguises.
And Mafalda Hopkirk was the unlucky target for Hermione Granger.
#4: A secretly talented witch
Mafalda Hopkirk might look like a frail person.
And the way she carried herself might not inspire confidence as well.
But don’t let her looks deceive you…
Because she’s actually quite the talented witch.
How so, you ask?
For example, Mafalda could cast a non-corporeal Patronus.
And that’s the strongest defensive spell in the wizarding world.
So if Ms. Hopkirk ever found herself cornered by dark wizards…
She could still put up a decent fight before going down.
On top of that, Mafalda could use Apparition pretty well too.
It’s the teleportation spell every wizard and witch learned.
As a result, she could easily get in and out of the Ministry if she wanted to.

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Jessica Hynes voiced her role.
But in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the role of Ms. Hopkirk was recast.
And Sophie Thompson took the role.
