Reginald Cattermole background
Sadly, we don’t know much about Reginald’s childhood.
It’s never explored in the books or movies.
But fast forward to 1997…
We found out that Reginald Cattermole’s got a lovely family.
He’s married to Mary Cattermole. A muggle-born witch that comes from a non-wizarding bloodline.
And the couple had 3 children together. They were Maisie, Ellie, and Alfred Cattermole.
Reginald Cattermole occupation
Sometime after Reg’s 17th Birthday…
He joined the British Ministry of Magic. Which was the main governing authority over Britain’s wizarding community.
But did that mean Reginald played a pretty big role in the government?
Well, it didn’t.
You see, Reg worked in the Magical Maintenance Department. A fancy name for a magical janitor of sorts.
As a result, he spent most of his time mopping floors.
And also used counter-spells to clean up any jinxes that affected the building.
“Sounds very boring. Did Reginald Cattermole hate his job?”
Surprisingly, Reg didn’t mind it all.
He’s the type of wizard to be content. And Reg’s just happy to mind his own business.
In fact, research shows it’s a pretty healthy outlook too. And that work-life balance should always equal out any stress.
Not to mention it’s great for connecting with family since you’re not always busy.
Reginald Cattermole character
While it might seem like Reg lived a pretty quiet life…
Everything changed at the height of the 2nd Wizarding War. When Voldemort rose to power again.
You see, the Dark Lord didn’t take too kindly to non-magical people.
So what did he decide to do?
Well, Voldemort set up the Muggle-born Registration Commission. A group of authorities solely focus on sending muggle-borns to jail.
And since Reg’s wife, Mary Cattermole, was born to a non-magical family…
She’s due for an unfair trial.
“When do things start to get interesting?”
Well, Harry and his friends needed to break into Reginald’s workplace.
They were looking for a Horcrux. A powerful tool that could turn a wizard or witch immortal.
And the trio thought Reginald’s situation was the best opportunity.
So on September 2, 1997, Hermione gave Reg a Puking Pastille. A magical sweet that made you vomit uncontrollably.
And in that short moment, Hermione took a lock of Reg’s hair. So Ron could use it later to disguise himself as Reginald Cattermole.
As a result, with Reg out of the way and the trio in disguise…
They attended Mary Cattermole’s trial in Reginald’s place.
And right when the trio had everybody fooled…
Harry managed to steal the magical artifact. So they quickly made their escape.
Well, not until the real Reginald came back looking all confused.
And it’s a movie clip I definitely recommend watching again:
More facts about Reginald Cattermole
#1: Reginald badly wanted to be by his wife’s side
While the scene’s intended to be funny…
Reginald Cattermole was seriously worried for his wife.
And he promised to be by her side during the trial.
In fact, a study shows family relationships tie into well-being. It’s why people go above and beyond for their loved ones.
As a result, it’s no surprise why Reg decided to stand beside Mary. Even if it meant certain doom for both of them because of the unfair trial.
So if you think about what Harry and his friends did…
You have to agree that it’s kind of evil to mess with an important family matter.
But on the bright side, they did manage to give the Cattermoles time to escape.
#2: He rushed back as fast as he could
Reginald Cattermole had it rough when he couldn’t stop vomiting.
And that’s why he had to get medical assistance ASAP.
But did Reg stay in the hospital for a long time?
No, he came back as fast as he could.
In fact, he’s still in his tighty whiteys when we saw him again.
And while it’s a nudge for a bit of comic relief…
It’s also proof of how much he cared about his wife
So much that embarrassment didn’t matter.
And it’s 1 of the weird life lessons I’ve learned from Harry Potter.
#3: Nobody knows what happened after
Most fans like to think the Cattermoles got away.
But in reality, we never heard from them again.
In fact, the books or movies never mentioned what happened after.
As a result, nobody knows if they managed to escape.
Or if Harry and his friends’ actions doomed a family.
On top of that, Ron Weasley said he got the feeling Reg’s not quick-witted.
So it’s far more likely they got captured.
But then again, that’s just a theory.
And that’s 1 of the many reasons why Harry Potter’s so popular.
Fans like us can’t help but think about where everybody ended up!
