Sir Cadogan background

Sir Cadogan’s born back in the Middle Ages during the early times of magic.

In this timeline, there’s a pretty good chance he studied under Godric Gryffindor. The founder of Gryffindor House.

Because Cadogan’s sorted in that name.

So despite being rather hot-headed…

He might have a few magical tricks up his sleeve.

Courtesy of his great professors at the time.

Sir Cadogan’s known to be quite brave.

However, maybe a tad bit too much because his peers described him as reckless.

And sometimes even insane.

But a study shows bravery can stem from self-confidence.

And also being quite the risk taker.

So it might just be Sir Cadogan’s inner Gryffindor showing.

Sir Cadogan occupation

According to wizarding tales…

After Cadogan’s studies, he became friends with Merlin. A legendary medieval wizard.

But why did he try so hard to spark a friendship with this great wizard?

Well, it’s because the Merlin was his ticket to the Knights of the Round Table. The famous knighthood that served King Arthur, ruler of Britain during that time.

“Wait, why doesn’t Sir Cadogan show up in any of the stories?”

Well, he’s been removed from them.

Especially in all Muggle versions.

Since he never played that big of a role anyway.

In fact, it’s not just in the books of non-magical people.

Sir Cadogan’s just not that famous among wizards and witches too.

But does that mean he’s got nothing to show for it?

No, of course not.

A knight’s brave tale

A Knight's Brave Tale

Even Cadogan’s got achievements.

In fact, his most famous one’s defeating the Wyvern of Wye. A creature that looked like a dragon. And attacked the villages and counties of southwestern England.

“That sounds cool. Did Sir Cadogan slay the wyvern in an epic fashion?”

Well, not quite.

In his 1st attempt, he actually lost.

The beast managed to kill his horse.

And it even broke his wand and shattered his sword.

Not to mention completely destroyed his visor.

But did he run away?

Yes and no.

Sir Cadogan escaped but didn’t want to give up.

So he looked for a stead.

And rode a fat pony charging at the wyvern.

Sir Cadogan ended up getting eaten, but a miracle happened.

His broken wand had done it.

It pierced the beast’s tongue.

Enough to make the creature explode.

(Which might be the reason why he’s not as famous. Because he defeated a wyvern with pure luck and not skill or might.)

Life after death

When Sir Cadogan’s still alive. A poor wizard commissioned a painting for him.

But it looked rather comical because his sword’s too big and the pony fatter than usual.

However, despite the glaring differences…

It’s still a magical portrait.

So Sir Cadogan’s personality ended up living in Hogwarts.

Sure, he might not be as helpful as Phineas Nigellus Black. A previous headmaster who could also talk through a portrait.

But Sir Cadogan was certainly amusing to talk with.

And this deleted scene shows the students found him funny too:

More facts about Sir Cadogan

#1: Sir Cadogan’s got 3 ex-wives and 17 children

Although it sounds unlikely…

It seems the recklessly brave knight’s quite the ladies’ man.

In fact, maybe a bit too much.

Because he had 3 ex-wives.

And every one of them left Sir Cadogan since the ladies found some fault in him.

Plus, can you blame the women?

It’s the same guy who charges straight into wyverns we’re talking about.

What’s worse, Cadogan’s got 17 children.

And apart from his ex-wives…

Tales suggest that he had many romantic encounters too.

So his hot-headedness may have been passed on to his numerous children.

However, I worry about Sir Cadogan’s health.

Because research shows separation isn’t good for the brain.

In fact, you become a lot more prone to alcohol abuse too.

So there’s a good chance may have frequented the pubs a bit too much.

Especially given all the failed romances Sir Cadogan came across in his lifetime.

#2: Guardian of Gryffindor Tower for a short time

“That’s impossible. Why’d Hogwwarts even trust Sir Cadogan with a job? Isn’t he a bit too foolhardy?”

I’ll be honest.

Your guess is just as good as mine.

But there’s a pretty good reason behind his new position as Guardian of Gryffindor Tower

Even if he’s guarding the Gryffindor common room for just a short time.

You see, the Fat Lady’s portrait was ruined by Sirius Black.

And the original guardian had to leave because a dangerous convict was on the loose.

But why Sir Cadogan of all people, you ask?

Well, all the other portraits were far too scared.

And Cadogan’s the only 1 willing to step up to the task.

#3: He cheered for Harry in the Battle of Hogwarts

Even though there’s nothing left of Sir Cadogan but a painting…

You can bet he’s always ready to fight.

For example, during the Battle of Hogwarts. The climactic clash between pursuers of good and Dark Lord Voldemort’s forces.

Sir Cadogan’s actually there.

And even if he can’t bring out his sword for battle…

Or, fall clumsily into enemies and beat them by sheer luck…

He cheered for Harry Potter.

While Harry ran through the castle, Cadogan shouted at him.

He told the boy to drive out the Death Eaters.

In fact, he called the dark wizards funny names too. Like dogs, scoundrels, and rogues.

Which is pretty fitting since Sir Cadogan’s from the Middle Ages.
