13 reasons why people hate Hermione Granger

#1: She can be very close-minded

Hermione Granger might be smart.

But while she may have been great with books…

Her intelligence actually made her pretty close-minded.

You see, Hermione ended up dismissing anything that she couldn’t find proof for.

And even if that sounds smart on paper…

Let’s not forget we’re in the wizarding world.

A place where almost anything’s possible.

But in Hermione’s case…

She ignored everything that didn’t line up with her beliefs.

For example, do you remember the Divination classes?

Well, Hermione considered the subject of predicting the future to be useless.

And that reading the stars was not real magic.

Yet was Hermione Granger right?

Not by a long shot.

In fact, Firenze the Centaur predicted the wizarding war only using the stars.

Plus, the entire Centaur Colony already saw Harry’s death at the hands of the evil Lord Voldemort.

As a result, it’s not shocking why people hate Hermione.

She needs to be a bit more open-minded.

Take, for example, Luna Lovegood.

A character that even J.K. Rowling admitted:

“Luna is likely to believe ten impossible things before breakfast.”

And if Hermione took a page from Luna’s book…

Hermione could learn a lot from her.

#2: She always thinks she knows best

Hermione Always Thinks She Knows Best

Look, I know that fighting for what’s right is a good thing.

In fact, it’s 1 of Gryffindor’s best traits too.

But in Hermione Granger’s case…

She always thinks she knows best.

Even when everybody tells her the exact opposite.

For example, do you remember the House-elves?

Well, they were magical beings who were loyal to their wizarding masters.

And while that sounds a lot like slavery…

You’re not wrong.

In fact, it’s 1 of the reasons people think Harry Potter’s overrated.

But if we’re going by the in-universe explanation…

The House-elves actually enjoyed their lives.

And that goes double for the Elves at Hogwarts.

Yet Hermione thought otherwise.

So she kept bothering them…

Trying to break the House-elves free from their oath to Hogwarts.

As a result, many fans dislike Hermione for always meddling in other people’s lives…

Especially when the very same people never asked for her help.

#3: A shockingly cruel witch

I know it sounds hard to believe.

But it’s actually true.

Hermione Granger had a knack for cruelty.

For example, let’s take a look at nosy journalist Rita Skeeter.

We know she’s not a well-meaning person.

And she’ll jump at the chance to write about controversy.

So if anyone deserves a bad day or two…

It’s her.

But what does any of this have to do with Hermione, you ask?

Well, as a form of payback…

Hermione Granger trapped Rita Skeeter in a jar.

And not just for a few hours to learn her lesson…

But an entire week.

In fact, a study shows that this is a sign of a criminal psychopath.

Because this behavior falls in line with an extreme lack of empathy.

#4: Scarring Marietta for life

I don’t like what Marietta Edgecombe did.

And there’s no excuse for ratting out Dumbledore’s Army to Dolores Umbridge.

But no matter how big of a deal it was to reveal Harry Potter’s secret organization…

Marietta doesn’t deserve to be scarred for life because of that decision.

So what exactly did Hermione do, then?

Well, she put a nasty jinx on every D.A. member.

And if anybody ratted the organization out…

Pimples would start growing on your forehead that spell out the word “SNEAK”.

But while it sounds harmless…

The scars would never fully heal.

And even after several months…

You could still see the scarring on Marietta’s forehead.

But apart from the pimples themselves…

Think about the irreversible damage to Marietta’s reputation.

And to think all she was trying to do was side with her mother.

Luckily, she at least had her best friend Cho Chang.

However, it really showed off Hermione Granger’s true colors.

And after seeing how low she was willing to go…

It’s no surprise why some fans hate her.

#5: Got super jealous

I’m not saying you’re not allowed to feel jealous anymore.

But in Hermione Granger’s case…

It made her character unbearable at times.

And it becomes even more infuriating…

When you know she could simply walk up to Ron Weasley and take the initiative.

For example, do you remember when Fleur Delacour first arrived at Hogwarts?

Well, everybody was staring at her…

Because she was simply stunning.

However, this didn’t sit well with Hermione.

And because she was jealous of the attention Fleur was getting from the boys…

Hermione Granger decided to hate her for no reason.

On top of that, let’s not forget Lavender Brown.

And when she started dating Ron Weasley…

Hermione stopped talking and nearly cut off all connections with Ron.

On the bright side…

At least we got this funny love triangle scene from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince:

#6: Her fear of failing

There’s nothing wrong with getting good grades.

And I’m sure a lot of people don’t like the idea of failing a class.

But in Hermione Granger’s case…

The slightest bit of failure was her greatest fear in life.

And when it was her turn with the Boggart.

It showed Professor McGonagall telling Hermione she failed her exams.

“But that doesn’t sound too bad?”

Of course, looking at it alone makes me look like the bad guy.

Yet once you consider that other people’s Boggarts were He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

You get to see how much of a perfectionist Hermione Granger truly was…

Which happens to be 1 of the worst traits of Ravenclaws.

“Wait, isn’t Hermione a Gryffindor?”

Yes, of course.

But even the Sorting Hat had trouble deciding between Gryffindor or Ravenclaw…

Because she’s got quite the addiction to being perfect.

Not to mention being smart.

#7: Arrogant know-it-all

Sure, it’s great that Hermione’s incredibly smart.

But all that knowledge often worked to her disadvantage…

Because it made her come off as an arrogant know-it-all.

For example, when Professor Snape tried to hold a class discussion.

He wanted to hear from other students…

Instead of Hermione answering for everyone.

So did she take the hint and sit quietly for a change?

No, Hermione answered Professor Snape’s questions…

Even if he never addressed her in the first place.

And that’s how we got this memorable quote:

“That is the second time you have spoken out of turn, Miss Granger… Five more points from Gryffindor for being an insufferable know-it-all.”

#8: She didn’t really care all that much about her parents

Okay, put down your pitchforks.

I know that Hermione Granger protected her parents during the wizarding war.

And erasing herself from their memories wasn’t an easy decision.

But what about everything before that?

Have you ever considered any other times Hermione stayed connected with her family?

Well, as sad as it sounds…

She hardly ever saw them.

Or even mentioned them.

You see, from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and onward…

She barely visited her parents.

Hermione spent most of her time with the Weasleys.

And while the Weasley family home sounds like a great time…

She could’ve at least spent some of her summer breaks with family.

In fact, even research agrees.

Because staying connected with your loved ones is important for your well-being.

As a result, it’s 1 of the things some fans just hate about Hermione Granger.

#9: Bossy with Harry and Ron

Hermione might have the best intentions in mind.

And with Harry and Ron running headfirst into trouble…

Somebody had to be the more responsible one.

However, this also worked to her disadvantage.

Because Hermione often came off as extremely bossy.

For example, in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

She was always busy telling Harry and Ron what to do.

And some fans can’t help but feel that Hermione was way too controlling.

#10: Let Crookshanks attack Scabbers

Look, I’m not trying to turn a blind eye to the elephant in the room.

I know Scabbers was Petter Pettigrew in disguise.

And he’s the man responsible for the death of Harry Potter’s parents.

But that doesn’t excuse Hermione from letting Crookshanks attack Ron’s pet rat.

It caused Ron Weasley a lot of stress…

Because he was really worried about Scabbers.

So how did Hermione respond?

Well, she kept denying it…

Saying that Crookshanks wouldn’t ever hurt anybody.

And now that Scabbers was conveniently a bad guy…

Hermione doesn’t feel the need to say sorry anymore.

As a result, some fans strongly believe Ron deserved an apology.

#11: Always got physical with Ron

For most fans, it came off as cute.

Because the 2 of them ended up with each other.

But if you stop looking through rose-colored glasses…

Romance doesn’t excuse any form of hitting.

And Hermione Granger had a bad habit of getting physical.

For example, do you remember Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince?

Hermione kept hitting Ron with a book…

Just because he didn’t ask about Harry’s whereabouts first.

In fact, Hermione even sent a flock of birds to attack Ron.

And while you could play it off as jealousy…

Some fans see it for the darker tones.

The beginning of a very toxic relationship.

As a result, Hermione’s habit of hurting Ron Weasley got her a lot of hate.

#12: Movie Hermione turned Ron into comic relief

If you’ve only seen the movies…

Then you’ve probably assigned Ron as the funny comic relief.

And Hermione Granger was the smart sidekick who always knew what to do.

However, the book versions of these 2 were totally different.

In fact, a lot of the cool things Hermione ended up doing…

Well, they were actually Ron Weasley’s actions in the book first.

For example, in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

When the golden trio got trapped in a Devil’s snare

It was Ron Weasley who stepped up.

And he told Harry and Hermione how to deal with the dangerous plant.

But in the film version…

Hermione Granger got the line.

As a result, some fans hate her for it.

Because she stole a lot of Ron’s thunder.

Cutting him down to a character only good for jokes.

#13: She only reads non-fiction

Hermione Granger loved reading books.

And naturally…

Bookworms and avid readers loved her character.

However, Hermione read non-fiction…

Exclusively.

And because she could be quite judgemental.

Not to mention was already a perfectionist.

If Hermione saw someone ready fantasy or something less academic…

Then there’s a good chance she’ll look down on you for it.

And it’s 1 of the reasons why fans dislike her.

Hermione gave off that snob aura nobody wanted to deal with.
