7 Real Reasons Why SpongeBob Is So Annoying (Updated 2023)

Our favorite yellow sponge of Bikini Bottom has his moments.

In fact, many of SpongeBob’s jokes always make me laugh.

However, there are times when he gets on my nerves…

So much so that I have to turn off the TV.

And there’s more than one reason why SpongeBob’s annoying.

Continue reading to discover:

  • 3 grossest moments from the show.
  • 5 times the Nicktoon was a bit too stupid.
  • 7 real reasons why SpongeBob is so annoying.

Why is SpongeBob so annoying – 7 reasons

#1: He’s super loud

Look, I know being noisy is part of SpongeBob’s character.

A lot of the storylines always revolve around his super loud nature.

But there’s a huge gap between funny noise versus downright annoying sounds.

For example, his signature laugh is a running gag for the show.

However, if it takes up more than a minute of the episode’s runtime…

Most of us are thinking the same thing:

“I can’t take any more of this.”

Plus, SpongeBob’s not the only offender of noise pollution.

Even his best friend, Patrick, gets pretty loud.

In the episode Squidward’s School for Grown-Ups, the starfish-sponge duo go boat screaming.

Yes, literally shouting at every boat that passes by.

On top of that, a study explains that too many loud sounds can take a toll on your body.

So it’s only natural you find SpongeBob extremely annoying at times…

Because your body just doesn’t enjoy loud sound levels.

#2: A disgusting sponge

SpongeBob Is So Annoying Because He's Disgusting

SpongeBob is gross.

And despite being a table sponge meant for cleaning…

He can get into pretty nasty situations that irritate many viewers.

For example, in The Splinter episode. A small piece of wood gets stuck to his thumb.

Normally, a pair of tweezers and holding your breath do the trick…

However, in SpongeBob’s case, everything takes a turn for the worse.

First, he tries calling Patrick to help him with his splinter troubles.

But knowing his starfish best friend is far from the brightest of Bikini Bottom…

They get nowhere.

What’s worse, SpongeBob’s thumb grows abnormally big.

You can even see the pus oozing from the top.

And some people who can’t handle their share of grossed-out scenes are thinking:

“I signed up for a kid’s show, not this.”

Of course, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

And some of the grossest moments for me include:

  • A closeup with Squidward’s nose.
  • SpongeBob gets sick with the suds.
  • Accidentally ripping off Squidward’s toenail.

#3: Always tortures Squidward

I know SpongeBob’s octopus neighbor can make some people’s blood boil.

Squidward’s self-centered nature shows, and many people dislike him for it.

But he’s actually not a bad guy.

Well, if you don’t count the moments he’s laughing at SpongeBob’s misery…

Like when Squidward’s scaring the lovable sponge for no reason.

However, the most annoying part is the flip side.

And SpongeBob is more guilty of torturing Squidward all the time.

Of course, I know it’s supposed to come off as a joke.

And yet, I can’t help but feel it’s far too cruel…

For example, SpongeBob gets his hands on Mermaid Man’s belt. Which is an extremely strong superhero accessory.

He uses it on Squidward without any practice or warning at all.

So what do you think happens when a clueless sponge gets a hero’s magical belt?

Nothing good.

In fact, Squidward goes through many horrors…

He’s shrunk to the size of a tomato, and his body morphs into different abominations.

Plus, that’s just the start.

You can watch this video to see how many times Squidward’s house gets destroyed too:

#4: Never stops crying

I’m no stranger to shedding a tear when I feel like it.

But SpongeBob takes it to another level…

And goes from sad to absolutely annoying.

In fact, he cries so much that he creates rivers.

For example, in the A Day Without Tears episode. SpongeBob wails every chance he gets.

The table sponge even starts bawling his eyes out when a sad tune plays on the radio.

Sure, the first few times aren’t as bad.

But when he cries around the clock, you can’t help but wonder:

“Does SpongeBob ever stop?”

In his defense, a study shows a link between crying and self-soothing.

However, most of his tear-jerking moments feel shallow.

So what’s he crying for anyways?

No reason other than to be annoying.

#5: Forgets his own lessons

Believe it or not, there’s a lot you can learn from watching SpongeBob.

And while he may spend most of the time joking around, there’s always a lesson in the story.

Sadly, even if the viewers learn something new…

SpongeBob forgets everything and starts back at zero.

For example, in the Karate Choppers episode. The sponge’s skills rival Sandy the squirrel’s fighting prowess.

And it’s super cool to know that SpongeBob can hold his own despite being gullible most of the time.

However, in the Karate Island episode, the table sponge seemingly forgets he knows how to fight.

What happened?

Probably an oversight or just bad writing.

In earlier seasons, SpongeBob doesn’t blindly trust his best friend, Patrick.

But in later seasons, it’s like that part of his brain received a complete memory wipe.

The sponge even decides to become mailmen with the starfish.

And they end up annoying other people in Bikin Bottom as well…

On the bright side, a study shows that forgetfulness can be a sign of intelligence.

But I can’t help but feel like that fact escapes SpongeBob.

#6: Stupid for no reason

SpongeBob is a kid’s show.

And stupidity among the characters helps set up most of the punchlines.

However, that doesn’t excuse being dumb all the time.

And when SpongeBob is stupid for no reason…

It can be very annoying.

For example, SpongeBob actually takes pride in his work making Krabby Patties.

Like in the Krusty Love episode, the table sponge tells off Mr. Krabs for turning him into his little cupid.

But in more recent seasons, he’s more of a slave.

SpongeBob does everything Mr. Krabs tells him to do.

No questions asked.

Worse, it’s not just SpongeBob who’s stupid for no reason.

Bikini Bottom knows Chum Bucket’s food tastes absolutely horrible.

So they should probably think twice before eating there, right?

However, a quick slogan change to:

“Chum is Fum!”

And suddenly, everyone’s eating disgusting food.

As a result, you can’t help but reflect:

“Just how bad do things get?”

#7: Over-the-top expressions

I’m not saying SpongeBob should turn into a documentary.

That would just ruin the show.

And I don’t think I could tolerate Patrick’s voice to become a narrator for anything.

It would sound too funny for me.

But SpongeBob’s over-the-top expressions can get pretty annoying…

Despite being one of the main running gags of the Nicktoon.

Sometimes, the animations and reactions help with the story.

However, there are moments when it’s just a bit too much for a lot of people.

For example, the SpongeBob in RandomLand episode.

And in the infamous many doors scene, Squidward starts seeing very unsettling stuff.

Sure, some would argue that it was a great episode overall.

But there’s no denying that some expressions and imagery rubbed people the wrong way.

For instance, the close-up shot of Squidward’s face with enlarged eyes.

He had black tears running down his face while staring blankly back at the screen.

And even if research proves that expressiveness can help students…

Sometimes, SpongeBob’s methods do the exact opposite.
