Grawp background

Grawp was born sometime before 1931.

And he was a giant that stood 4.88 m (16 ft) tall. A magical being that could grow up to 7.62 m (25 ft) in height.

In fact, his mother was Fridwulfa.

So if that name sounds familiar…

That’s because she’s also Rubeus Hagrid’s mother.

Unfortunately, despite Gawp’s height…

It’s actually considered pretty small for giant standards.

As a result, Fridwulfa ended up abandoning Grawp.

Worse, the other giants bullied him too.

On the bright side, Albus Dumbledore let Hagrid take him to Hogwarts.

And even if Grawp didn’t want to come with his brother.

Hagrid dragged him to the Scotland Highlands…

Because it was for his own good.

“But where would a giant as big as him even stay?”

While there was no space for Grawp inside Hogwarts…

The Forbidden Forest was always open.

And the dark forest became his new home.

Plus, Hagrid spent his time taking care of him too.

Grawp occupation

Grawp wasn’t particularly smart.

So there was no chance of him ever getting a job.

In fact, Hagrid already had enough trouble trying to teach him English.

Something that the other creatures of the forest thought was impossible to do.

As a result, Grawp never really got the chance to have a career…

Because he was a bit of a troublemaker himself.

In fact, he even tried leaving Hogwarts multiple times too.

Grawp character

Grawp had grey skin.

In fact, he looked like a small hill if he laid down.

But as for his personality…

He was actually quite violent.

Like attacking Hagrid when he was in a bad mood.

However, Grawp did end up changing.

Because Hagrid’s influence soon made him kind and compassionate toward others.

And besides being a lot more gentle with people…

He could also speak a bit of English too.

Even if it was a bit janky with a few words.

Like calling Hermione “Hermy” instead.

More facts about Grawp

#1: He was supposed to be Hagrid’s teaching assistant

Grawp wasn’t the smartest giant alive.

In fact, he had a difficult time speaking any bit of English too.

However, Rubeus Hagrid thought otherwise.

And he believed that Grawp could learn a lot more under his wing…

Slowly becoming a teaching assistant for him at Hogwarts.

“But I don’t remember seeing Grawp as a teacher’s aid in the movies, though?”

Well, Harry and Hermione convinced Hagrid otherwise.

You see, the half-giant had a knack for handling dangerous creatures.

And they didn’t want Grawp to be in any danger.

However, it did show how much Hagrid loved his half-brother.

In fact, even research agrees with his thinking too.

Because connecting with loved ones can be good for your health too.

#2: Almost crushed his brother Hagrid

As funny as it sounds…

It actually happened.

You see, Rubeus Hagrid couldn’t accept that Albus Dumbledore had passed away.

And there was no holding back the tears…

So he simply bent his head down so nobody could see.

But can you guess who was there to comfort him?

Well, it was none other than Grawp.

A less violent giant now wearing clothes.

He tried patting Hagrid’s head.

But Grawp ended up smashing Hagrid into the ground.

On the bright side, Grawp managed to make up for it, though…

Because the 2 giant brothers were embracing each other after the funeral.

And it’s good to see that Hagrid had someone…

Since research shows grief can be a dangerous thing.

In fact, it can even lead to depression and anxiety.

#3: He fought in the Battle of Hogwarts

Sure, Grawp might not be the fighting kind of giant.

Plus, he’s a lot smaller than the rest of his species too.

But did that stop him from protecting Hogwarts?

Not in the slightest.

In fact, he ran straight first into action…

Accompanied by Buckbeak and Thestrals too.

And when the winged horses finished the last of the enemy giants.

Grawp made sure to protect the wizards and witches from dark wizards.

So even if the Grawp couldn’t use any magic…

He was a big help during the climactic battle.

Because anyone going up against a 16-foot beast will surely have second thoughts.
